PastureSmarts

Pasture management made easy

Increase pasture consumption, drive profit

Make the best possible grazing decisions every day

Your farm, visualised

The intuitive map-centric display gives you an instant overview of your whole farm; pasture yield per paddock, days since last graze, withholds. Quickly identify the thick end of the wedge.

Access from anywhere

On a mobile or at the computer, you, and – if you choose – your staff and your consultants can access your farm data from anywhere, enhancing communication and speeding up decisions.

Bespoke for your farm

PastureSmarts starts with an accurate map of your farm and uses satellite images and each paddock’s biophysical data along with local daily climate updates to estimate the pasture yield on each paddock. Like every model, it’s only as good as the information you feed it so we’ve made entering on-farm activities quick and easy too.

Convenient records

Whether for compliance or continuous improvement, keep records of nutrient applications, grazing history, supplementary feeds, and paddock treatments.

Smarter pasture management

Make data-driven decisions with accurate farm indicators such as days since last graze, area in rotation, round length, grazing interval, growth rate, average pasture cover, and more.
Track applications and irrigation per paddock to identify poor performers, helping you confidently make decisions early.

Plan ahead

As well as using historical climate data every day, the model has been developed to use long-term forecast data to provide one, three and six-month pasture growth outlooks, shown as simple coloured indicators. The shorter the forecast, the more accurate, but the detailed chart shows the full predicted range, so you can look further into the forecast and form your own opinion.

Paddock yield estimates

Satellite estimates of yield are visible when clear sky data is available. This shows you the differences across your farm and the variability in each paddock. Each pixel in the satellite image is 10 x 10 m on the ground – detailed enough to imagine on the farm and show the real differences. The four most recent images are available to view and compare so that you can track changes and find areas that are always high or low performing, enabling you to optimise your management.

“Pasture consumption is a key driver of profitable pasture-based farms. Innovation and technology like PastureSmarts will enhance farm’s profitability. ”

How does it work?

PastureSmarts’ growth model, developed by Agriculture Research Victoria scientists, is tailored to estimate pasture yield (kg DM/ha) in each paddock across your farm. It uses the full historical climate data available to set up the model for your farm. To get it started and help it assess the relative yields across each paddock, whenever we have a satellite image we use those estimates to reset the differences across the farm.

The most important thing to make it work is your grazing data. A couple of clicks each day, or weekly with the graze planner, will get the model humming for your farm.

The average yield per paddock is updated every day with new climate and grazing data.
